One speeding offence could now mean a ban for new drivers

Proposals are now in place for a tightening of road safety laws, under the new plans a driver exceeding the speed limit by 15mph would receive 6 fixed penalty points on his/her licence. For any new driver who has held a full licence for less than 2 years this would mean disqualification.

Other proposals include the police being able to issue a £60 fine and 3 points to careless drivers, rather than having to take them to court. Acts classed as careless include driving at night with no lights on, driving too close to the vehicle in front, failing to signal before turning and sudden breaking.
